It's That Time of Year Again

Finals time.

This year finals week started out promising. Everyone knows that pesky last day of class on Monday is really pointless so school is basically over the Friday (or Thursday) before. So in celebration of the end of the semester, and Jasper's half birthday (his real birthday is in the summer so we can't celebrate that, and besides who would argue with celebrating for a pet?) I threw a party. I'd say is was pretty successful. Jasper enjoyed a kitty sized White Russian and everyone else enjoyed Pimms, punch and beer pong. So the end of the semester was looking up. Saturday night Ryan and I saw Morning Glory, which is refreshingly funny. Harrison Ford, Rachael McAdams, and Diane Keaton are great together and it's a really funny story about a tv show producer trying to save a dying morning show.
Monday I had my last real test, went to an end of the semester party and started feeling like I was getting a cold. Tuesday morning my throat was sore and I felt awful so I spent most of the day in bed sleeping and downing medicine. Tuesday evening I was feeling good, Ryan and I went to see Megamind at the drive in, which was a lot of fun. But by the end of the night I was pretty much dying. Luckily I have an awesome boyfriend who took care of me, got me medicine and vitamin c and put me to bed promising to return the next morning at 6:50 so we could go camp out in the SUB for bowl game tickets. The next morning I could barely swallow my throat was so swollen, but I got my Texas Bowl ticket and made a doctors appointment at the ever so helpful (useless) Baylor Health Clinic. Where the first thing I was told was that I had tonsillitis (really? shocker) and probably mono (because the nurse practitioner is "never wrong"). So I was then put through 3 attempts to draw blood from my tiny veins, all of which failed and left me looking like a heroin addict. It was then suggested that we draw blood from my hands, but I stopped that from happening. There is something about a sick, crying, half not breathing person that makes old ladies feel bad. So it was decided that we would do a finger prick, forgo the CBC and just do a mono test. Well after two attempts at pricking we finally had enough blood and big shock the test was negative. But since the nurse practitioner who was seeing me is never wrong, it was decided that I could go visit the lab the next day to get a full blood and mono test done. In the mean time I was given two different drugs which I took and went back to sleep. So the next day, although I was feeling much better I went to get blood drawn. Luckily we got it out on the first try, two whole vials and big surprise I didn't have mono.
So all in all, it's been an interesting week. I'm not dying, I don't have mono but it does look like I've been shooting up Heroin. One final left on Monday and my senior year is half way over!

It's like Christmas in a Bottle!

With Kenn Starr, the president of Baylor!

So many things are coming to an end! This weekend was Fall Ball and my very last football game as a Baylor student. Crazy, I know. Graduation is like 173 days away!

Fall Ball was Friday night. It was downtown at the Phoenix Ballroom and it was a lot of fun. Emily, James, Ryan (my boyfriend/date) and I went to Elite for dinner before Fall Ball. We were the cool kids who all got the exact same meal at dinner, chicken tender salad. Haha. Then we headed downtown. Fall Ball, with its fall theme, was decorated in fall colors, like oranges, cream and brown. It was really pretty, there was even a fire place with a nice warm fire. We had pumpkin spice cake balls, apple cheesecake, cinnamon spice brownies with fudge on top, and a hot chocolate and coffee bar. The leftovers of which are currently in my fridge! We spent the night dancing and hanging out, enjoying my last semi formal with ADPi. After Fall Ball Ryan and I took a bottle of wine to the hottub at Rivercrest and relaxed there for awhile.

Saturday was the Baylor v OU game. Ryan and I went to the Delta Sig (His frat) tailgate before the game. At which I tried Shiner Holiday Cheer, which basically tastes like Christmas in a bottle and is my new favorite beer. We hung out, ate, and I met a lot of his friends. It was a lot of fun. A little before the game a bunch of us met up to run the Baylor line for the last time (the line is all the freshman and at the last home game, seniors too who run the field and cheer for the team as they come out of the locker room). It was really cool to do that one last time and to be on the field when the football team came out. Even though OU killed us it was a fun game, and not too cold which was awesome. After the first quarter we left the stadium and watched the game back at the tailgate on tv for awhile and then at halftime went to dinner and watched the rest of the game at home. It's really strange to think that the next time I go to a Baylor game in Waco I'll be a visiting alumnae.
So basically it was an awesome weekend. Now I just have two days standing between me and thanksgiving break!

Halfway done?

So, Fall semester of senior year is almost over. Like literally almost over, I think there are approximately three weeks left. Thanksgiving break is coming up fast, so is Fall Ball, and the dreaded finals. Unfortunately I have three tests, and two major research papers before we even hit dead days. All of which I am putting off, senioritis has indeed set in.
In other news Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows comes out next week! So excited about that. I already have midnight tickets and am slightly tempted to dress up. Fall Ball is also next week, on Friday. Reagan is planning it so it should be fantastic and I know we are having pumpkin spice cake balls which promise to be delicious. I got my dress in the mail today, so now I just need some shoes and jewelry.

Now, onto today's awesome news. This morning I registered for my last semester at Baylor! I'm taking 12 hours, and will have no classes on Friday so the spring is looking up. It was really cool to run my degree audit and see the all requirements met message. Now I just need to find a job, and fill out some grad school applications and next semester can be all about having fun. It's really strange to be almost done with college.

Bowlcoming and Other Things

Things have been busy lately!
Lets see... I had my first job interview, finally got to go to Houston for a weekend, we built a float, homecoming was this weekend, and oh yeah Baylor beat K-State and is now bowl game eligible for the first time since 1995. We are also now ranked, 25th in the BCS, 24th in the coaches poll, and 25th in the AP poll. So it's been a pretty exciting weekend here in Waco.
Job Interview. Went well, it was with Target and it was good practice for all the future interviews I'm sure I'll have.
Homecoming weekend was awesome, an amazing last homecoming here at Baylor and probably one of the most fun football games I've been to (besides beating A&M sophomore year). As usual the weekend involved little sleep but it was really fun none the less. My parents were here for the weekend so they got to enjoy all the festivities too. Friday night was the bonfire and pep rally and Saturday was the parade and football game. The parade was an early morning as usual (5:30). This year however, I was riding in a 350Z with Emily who was a homecoming nominee for panhellinic. We had a lot of fun throwing candy at kids and our float looked amazing. The football game started with a lightning delay and a huge storm. So we hid out under the stands until the rain stopped and then everyone went back to their seats and the game started 2 hours late. It was an awesome game that ended close at 47-42 and gave us 6 wins for the season! Of course the Baylor students rushed the field and all did a huge sic'em and singing of "That Good Ole Baylor Line" with Ken Starr, David Crowder and the football team. So fun!
It's crazy how fast this semester has passed, we sign up for classes November 10th and I can't wait to see the "all requirements complete for graduation" message. So only a few weeks stand between Thanksgiving and then a few more between finals and Christmas and the end of fall of senior year!

Oh yeah, and the Rangers are going to the world series, but really who cares? They're not the Astros.

The Bucket List

Every senior has a bucket list, it's that list of things to do before graduation. My friends and I have been slowly coming up with ours and before I forget all these things I'm going to put it in writing.

Kyaking on the Brazos
Visit the mammoth site
Visit the Tx Rangers museum
Eat at Food for Thought
Find the Gorilla
Jump off the cliffs at Lake Whitney
Drink a Big O
Run through the fountains at the BSB
Pet the Bears (this is my personal goal, doubt it will happen)
Judge Baylor/ Waco themed pictures

That's all I can think of for now, lame I know.

In other news...

Baylor whooped up on Kansas in football this week (55 to 7). Yeah, take that jay hawk fans.

Also, in an exciting moment of app shopping with Reagan this weekend I aquired a police scanner app (we listened to the Waco channel for a bit), a nifty medical app and my personal favorite, the sex offender app. This is what Waco looks like
This only shows the offenders closest, so I'm sure there are more out there. It's when I see things like this that I think of this video:

The Future's so Birght

I gotta wear shades... hahaha
Anyway, today was the "Hire a Bear Career Fair" aka: totally nerve racking first encounter with possible employers.
It was surprisingly fun! I went in really nervous and left feeling like I might actually find a really cool job next year. I may have to compromise on the city I want to live in, but still if the job is right I guess I could compromise on the living spot. A lot of the companies at the career fair were very business major oriented but there were still a good group of people to talk to. The first table I visited was the Federal Bureau of Prisons, which sounds totally cool! They hire people to do all sorts of things, from guard to counselor. I also talked to Target, USAA, Providence Health Care, The Burke Center, a news station, the FBI, the secret service, and Eli Lilly. A few of the companies are coming back to do interviews later this semester that I can go to, I have an interview to apply to with the news station to see if I might be interested in reporting, and a few places told me to watch the job openings and they would contact me in March. So all in all it was a successful first job search! Plus I got to wear a suit, which looks pretty baller (and is really hot!).
Saturday is the for real GRE, so this week is just all about the future.

Ghouls night out

It seems like every where you turn in college people are getting engaged or married, especially here at Baylor where the Mrs. degree is a popular thing. Is it really necessary to be settling down at this point in our lives? I mean it's great if you find the person you want to spend your life in college but who cares if you don't? Despite the way some people act finding a husband in college doesn't need to be your goal. I know I'm not alone in this but I'm sick of people acting like it's a bad thing if you're not in a relationship, I don't need to feel bad that I don't have a boyfriend. I'm having fun, I'm figuring things out for myself, now I'm not saying that if the right person came along I wouldn't want a relationship but why rush things? My life goal isn't the ring by spring, as it is so fondly named here at Baylor. Anyway because of this Reagan and I came up with an idea for a single girls night out.
Tonight was Reagan, Jenny and my first ghouls night out. What is that you may ask? Well it's basically girls night out, but ghouls instead in honor of a Halloween sign Reagan and I found. So we are going to come up with fun places to go, like different happy hours or movies or concerts and just go and have fun. Anyway tonight we went to this new place called Sam's on the Square (tequila and tacos). Soo good! They serve a bunch of different kinds of tacos, some soups/ salads and appetizers. They also have a bunch of fun sounding drinks. We were there during happy hour so we got margaritas, queso and tacos! Yumm!! After dinner we went to "A Night with Sarah Palin" which was at the Ferrell Center on campus and it was a fundraiser benefiting Care Net crisis pregnancy center. Care net provides free pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, etc for those experiencing unexpected pregnancy and they are trying to expand their resources to provide a place for the mothers to live, and more counselors to talk to girls.  It was really cool, Sarah Palin is hilarious and a very relatable speaker. She spoke about being pro-life, and about her own experience in finding out her son was going to be born with down syndrome and her fears and about her daughters pregnancy and how Bristol dealt with that. Her accent is adorable, and I love that she doesn't care what the press says about her and her family. She told a lot of funny stories about caribou hunting in Alaska.
So our first ghouls night out was a success! On another note, Baylor is offering a practice GRE for free this weekend, so I'll be taking that, and two weeks later the real one! Also the career fair is coming up Sept 30, so I'll be there too looking for job.

Why Hello Septmember

School is quickly moving along, it's already week 3 here, we had a long weekend, and I made a resume. Excitement all around.
Let me start this post off with a few disclaimers 1) I don't have all the details on this, I don't personally know the guys involved 2) I realize that when I chose Baylor I was going to a private Baptist school and that it would be more conservative here.
Anyway, with that said something happened this week that just really bothered me. There is a fraternity on campus that is a local group and considers itself to be a christian group (I know a bunch of them and for the most part they are nice guys). Like I said, I don't have all the details on this but I guess in their bylaws it says they don't accept members who are gay (how a group of 18-20 something year old guys could seriously all vote for this amazes me). Well anyway I guess one of their members was sending forward text messages to other members and this made the guys involved uncomfortable, any way this basically forced outed the guy and he was brought to standards. Well I guess it was decided that the guy would be asked to go early alum (basically a nice way of kicking you out without actually revoking your membership). Now this whole situation really bothers me, first of all it's not a particularly "Christian" thing to do, second poor guy, he just came out which I'm sure was hard for him and now his group of friends is rejecting him for being himself. Like how shitty is that? When you join a frat you choose the group and the group chooses you, and to then later reject someone because of sexual preference is pretty crappy. This is the point in time when you should be there for someone, not isolate them and act like it's not ok to be who they are. Maybe this just bothered me because I have quite a few gay friends, and even a family member but I don't think you should look at someone differently because of their sexual orientation and it's really sad to think that a group would still do this, I mean I'd like to think the students here for the most part are very welcoming, and this says otherwise. It also makes me lose respect for the group as a whole.
On another note, I went to church this past weekend (sorry not Catholic church Mom) with my roommate and really enjoyed it. The topic of the week was "Happily Ever After" so it was about things you should be looking for in relationships and how a relationship should be a conscious decision made by both parties involved. It was an interesting sermon, and while I didn't agree with everything said I still enjoyed it.
Alright peeps, first test of the semester tomorrow morning so I've got to get to sleep.

School and What Not

For your viewing pleasure: chocolate covered ice

So as any of you read my blog know this semester I'm taking a psychology of relationships class. It's really turning out to be one of my favorite classes that I've taken at Baylor. Anyway, once a week we examine a study and an article about that study on a various aspect of relationships, so I thought I might blog about some of these studies.
This week was fatal attractions. What is a fatal attraction? No, it doesn't involve someone getting murdered. According to the study a fatal attraction is when the initially attracting quality is also the reason the relationship ended. In the study a group of people were asked to think back to their last failed relationship, they were then asked two questions. 1. What were the initial qualities that attracted you to your partner? 2. Looking back what were the qualities about the individual that you found least attractive? The researchers then looked to see if the qualities matched up, for example if the attracting quality was something like spontaneity, and the unattractive quality was irresponsibility a fatal attraction would have occurred (this was one of the highest occurring fatal attractions that's why I bring it up).
So some of the things we talked about in class were:
Do all couples go through fatal attractions, and some just work it out? Maybe, I mean all couples have their issues, there will always be certain things your partner does that annoy you, but do these always have to be fatal? I think a couple who has good communication skills, and who are both truly invested in the relationship for the same reasons can work these issues out. If you both want your relationship to work, and you both see something long term coming from it you are more likely to protect your investment by either picking your battles or learning to discuss your issues. If you were attracted to the person because of their impulsiveness, and the fact that they were fun you might later find them to be irresponsible, and it might be annoying that they can't make decisions or aren't on time to things, but if you can talk this out and express your concerns these are things that can be worked on. Relationships are about compromise, and working together and if you can do these things, I think fatal attractions can be overcome.
We also asked, Does the partner change in some way that makes the attraction fatal? This question is all in how you look at the situation, if someone was always spontaneous did they really move more along the spectrum into irresponsible, or did your perspective of their qualities change? You also have to think back on what you went into the relationship looking for. Studies show that people look for different qualities in short term and long term relationships. Qualities like fun, spontaneous, outgoing, etc are more welcome in a short term relationship but in a long term relationship, committed, caring, responsible, stable are more welcome qualities. So what did you go into the relationship expecting? If your expectations have changed that could contribute to the fatality of the attraction.
Other things the study discussed were that static attracting factors (like physical characteristics) were less likely to cause a fatal attraction. These things are unchanging, and if you are initially attracted to someones eyes that isn't likely to change. The study also found that the fatal qualities generalized over men and women, so to some degree we are all looking (or not looking) for the same things. It would have been interesting to do follow up with these people and see who was in/ entered into healthy long lasting relationships and if they learned from their mistakes. Many people look for their opposites to balance themselves out, but really the data shows similarities are more likely to promote working relationships.
It was a very interesting article, we had a really good discussion, and I think from it I took away the importance of knowing what you are getting into. Yes people change in relationships but you can't expect someone to change everything about themselves for you. Communication is key, and getting to know the person before rushing into something is important too. Rushing into something just to avoid being alone is never the answer, relationships are built over time, starting as friends and if they become something more great, but you have to be confident and secure with yourself as an individual before adding another person to your life.
Just some food for thought, I think the class is interesting so other people might too. Obviously no one else read the article, but if you have an opinion on the subject I'd love to hear it. It's been a pretty good week two, busy getting back into work and keeping up with school and the GRE (one month!) and I'm looking forward to the long weekend.

Also back by not so popular demand (school just started again)...

Last Firsts

Senior year means the year of "last firsts" (last first football game, last first test, etc) and this week they began. I had my last first day of undergrad, and my last first week of school. It's been good, and although my workload isn't any less burdensome than the past semesters I'm finally only taking classes I want to take. This is the first semester I actually really wanted to take all the classes I am taking and it's the first time I can drop most of my classes if the work looks too hard or if they seem boring. I don't think I'll be doing that but still, it's a nice feeling. I'm in a good place to graduate, I have two classes left to take in the spring and other than that I'm just taking things I wanted to take. It's a very good feeling, and although studying for the GRE will take up much of my time this semester I think Fall 2010 will be a good few months. I'm looking forward to building my last homecoming float, going to football games, fishbowl Fridays, scruffs, and spending time with my friends.
As for what classes I'm taking:
Learning and Behavior: This class also has a lab in which we train a rat to press a lever for food, and do other classical and operant conditioning exercises with them. The class is about well, learning and behavior. Dr. Riley is pretty cool and I think it will be a good class.
Renaissance and Reformation: Once again the name is self explanatory, the class is about the renaissance in Europe and the reformation. I like the time period, and we get to write a research paper on basically whatever we want so that is a plus.
Psychology of Personal Relationships: probably going to be my favorite class this semester. It's all about how we form relationships, why we are attracted to who we are, challenges relationships face, etc, etc. All of it is empirically driven, so we look at a lot of real life studies. I love the professor, she's hilarious and the material is really interesting.
Extreme Deviance: I'm really excited about this one too. It's about people who don't follow societies norms, the consequences, how norm are formed, etc. We got to learn about all the weirdo's out there, like the German Cannibal for example.
Adolescent Development: my first FCS class, so I'm a little out of my element in this one because it's not history or psychology but it should still be good. We get to mentor kids in the Waco school district which will be interesting.
It should be a pretty good semester, and hopefully along the way I'll figure out what I'm doing next May.

An End to a Summer

As summer draws to a close my senior year at Baylor gets closer every day, and while I'm excited to get back and excited at the idea of being almost done with college the real world gets closer and closer every day. This summer was amazing, traveling around Europe was fantastic and something I will never have the chance to do again (at least not for 5 weeks, with first class tickets and passes into basically every museum) but it all passed too fast. It's weird that BGB is no longer something to look forward to but something behind me. As senior year looms I realize that I have no idea what I'll be doing or where I'll be living a year from now. It's a strange feeling not knowing what the future holds, it's even weirder not having a plan for how I want things to work out. In high school I knew exactly what I wanted and where I wanted to be when I graduated, this year I have no idea. I've always been a planner so thats weird for me not to know, or even have an idea of what I might want to be doing.
Leave it to me to pick a major that is basically unmarketable without graduate school. I'm taking the GRE, so grad school is definitely an option, I'm not sure if I'm ready for the 6 years of work a PhD would take but a masters degree is doable. Honestly I'd love to just have a job when I graduate, I'm ready to work and have my own place and get life going I don't really want to be in school any longer but I don't really know how to make that happen, or even how to start looking for a job I'd enjoy. I also don't feel like I have much hope in the job market with the amount of post-graduate friends I have who are still unemployed, but we'll see. I move back to Waco on Saturday and classes start Monday and I'm ready to see what senior year has in store. I can't believe my life at Baylor is almost over, but I'm excited to figure out what's next.
Also, my cat is cute:

Day the last

Packed and ready for home, I hope my suitcases don't go over the weight limit! I can't believe this trip is over, although Sweden feels like forever ago it feels like we've only been in London a week or two. It's weird to think I'll be on a plane tomorrow morning headed home to 100 degree heat and 13 days till school starts again. Today was bittersweet, after my final (which I aced) I came back for a nap and to finish packing and then Ashley, Meggan and I headed out to get one last crepe. After stopping at Lillywhites Ashley and I headed to Euston station to find a Virgin train to a fun looking location. Virgin trains serve free food and drinks in first class and we wanted to get a few free meals today. So we ended up on a train to Manchester, of course it was raining when we got there so we didn't see much of the city but it was still a really fun and relaxing day. We've just been hanging out downstairs with everyone and now I'm finishing up my packing and getting ready for bed and tomorrow. I'ts been amazing, and I don't really want to leave. It's hard to believe I ate my last breakfast here this morning and took my last tube ride and first class train ride this afternoon. I've got to get up at 5am, Houston here I come!

Day 32

Only one more day here after today, it's almost time to go home. I'm ready, I don't have any regrets and I think I've seen everything/ been everywhere I wanted to go here so it will be nice to be home. Today is gonna be a really chill day, just studying and packing (I hope everything fits!). Last night we went to Fabric, a really cool club here. It has three dance floors all with different DJs and was a lot of fun. I'm using this post to upload a few videos from the Military Tattoo that I took.

Day 30-31: Scotland!

Friday morning we hopped on a 10am train to Edinburgh Scotland for the night. When we got into town we checked in at Pollock Halls and went into town to eat and explore. We are Italian and wandered the Royal Mile watching street performers for awhile. We also visited The Elephant House where J.K Rowling started writing Harry Potter! We saw the field that inspired quidditch and a grave yard where a few of the characters came from. There was a McGonagall grave and even Tom Riddle!
That night we ate dinner at the Candy Bar, where you can get candy flavored drinks. It was good and we all had a jammy doughnut which was really good. We also had tickets to the Military Tattoo at Edinburgh Castle which was amazing! It's military bands from all over the world performing, there was even a motorcycle team and the army physical training corps doing gymnastics! It was really cold but the rain held out which was nice.
This morning we were going to go hiking but it was raining so we went into town instead and I climbed up Calton hill which had an amazing view all over Edinburgh.
