Day 5: Pisa and Luca

Today started at the Museo San Marco in Florence where we saw frescos done by Fra'Angelico. The museum was once a place where monks lived and the frescos are all in their cells. Pretty cool.

After checking out that museum we hopped on a train headed to Pisa. Pisa turned out to be a fun, really cute town. We wandered through the town shopping our way to the tower. Once there I bought a ticket to climb (230 steps I think). They only let 30 people up at a time so while we waited for my group we took pictures, looked around the church and baptistry and relaxed on the grass around the tower.

A denim couch in Coin, a big department store here. Crazy! Who would buy this??

The climb wasn't terrible. Once you get out of the base the stairs turn into a small spiral staircase all the way up. You can definitely feel the slant though! The tower was built over a century and right away began to lean because of soft soil and unstable foundation. A lot of restoration had to be done to make the tower safe for people to climb, an good thing too because the view is pretty cool. You can see all of Pisa and the mountains from the top!
Looking down at my mom who skipped the climb

When I made it back down we found a place to eat lunch and made our way back to the train station. From here we took a train to Lucca, a medieval walled city. Lucca was very cute. The city has obviously expanded past the walls but they still remain fully intact. Here we rented bikes and climbed up the stairs to the top of the wall where we rode around the city. This was a lot of fun and we got a great view of the city inside the wall and the surrounding area. We were riding right at sunset which made it even prettier. We hung out in Lucca a bit after turning in our bikes before heading back to Florence where we ate a late dinner and headed back to the hotel.
This is the bathroom at the train station in Lucca. Just a hole in theground. They have the strangest bathrooms here.
